Reno is a smallish city (elev 4500', less than 300,000 pop, including Sparks) surrounded by mountains on all sides. Mt. Rose ski area and Lake Tahoe just over 20-miles away. Lots of "local neighborhoods" in every direction, and very spread out, with the Nimbyites living mostly in surrounding suburbs. What looks like the largest gated-community-cum-golf-course in the world is here (Arrowcreek).

There are 21 named parks along the Truckee River, which runs through downtown Reno. More like Boulder, Golden, and Fort Collins tossed in together, rather than a Vegas or Denver.

First impression of Reno, wow, so much better than Vegas! Much less traffic congestion, fairly easy to get around anywheres in town quickly. Once away from So. Virginia St, the traffic is not bad. In Vegas, there was "always" another car in the way, no matter which way you turned. Car insurance premiums in Reno are roughly 1/2 the cost as in Vegas.

However, whereas Vegas has endless miles of strip-mall [single-story structures lining the streets], Reno seems to have a high overabundance of large "shopping centers", per se. Large conglomerations of stores big and small, especially on the south end, and with huge, landscaped parking lots, mostly empty.

Mt Rose Ski Area is only 15 miles up Hwy-431 from south Reno. The ski area is actually on Slide Mountain (elev 9698') south of the highway, while Mt Rose itself (elev 10,776') is in the Mt Rose Wilderness Area north of the highway (28,000 acres, elev 6,400-10,776', 25-miles of trails). Of course, there are also 6-8 other ski areas within another 1/2 to 1-hours drive. See Mt. Rose.

The lake (elev 6300') is only about 25-miles from south Reno, up the Mt Rose highway.

Around Reno-Tahoe are the last stragglers of the northern extent of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Whereas the many high 14-ers are all 150-miles down south along Hwy-395, the peaks around here dwindle down to mostly the 8,000-9,000' range. Also, hiking info.

30-miles south of Reno is the quaint little city of Carson City (elev 4687', pop 57,000), also the capitol of Nevada. The Carson Valley also runs another 30-miles south to include the small towns of Minden+Gardnerville. Lots of agriculture and modern-day settlers.

Carson City lies smack in the middle of the trademark "Ponderosa" area shown for years on the TV series Bonanza (must rotate the show-map 90-degrees clockwise for true North). The area is so fertile and nice, small wonder Adam and Hoss Cartwright had their hands full shooting late-arriving settlers and claim-jumpers. Not in my neighborhood, Mister, Move on. (the original Nimbys).

13-miles southeast of Reno up the Geiger Grade (Hwy-341) is the tiny Comstock-Lode town of Virginia City (elev 6220', pop 938), made famous by gold, silver, and Mark Twain's book Roughing It, about his trip west in 1861. An estimated $1,000,000,000 (billion) in silver and gold came out of the mines here (but don't tell Bama or his friends in Washington). This is also where Bonanza's Hoss and Adam went, when they "went to town", and where Little-Joe was always getting his butt kicked by some baddie that quick-draw Adam later shot.
